I always love taking time off between Christmas and New Years. This year while we visited family, we also had some time at home in Brooklyn. I still had work to do, as we have a big year ahead and a lot to plan for…but time off at home feels like a luxury!   I don’t often feel that I have enough time to get things done around our apartment, cook good meals, paint, and catch up on reading. The weekends during the year seem to go so quickly, and time off is often spent visiting family or traveling which is wonderful but not always as relaxing, so I really relish this time at home.  I like taking this time to think about the year ahead and it feels like a little reset.

January through March in New York can be harsh. I’ve been fighting a cold, and the winter weather can be biting. It’s easy to feel a bit of those winter blues. Because of that, it’s the perfect time of year to focus on self-care, and this year I plan to do so more consciously.  For me that means getting a good night sleep, making time to be active, taking a bath, cozying my home, and also getting out of the house.

Here are a few ideas I’ll be incorporating into my daily routine:
Slowing down.
I’m going to make it a point to stretch every night before getting in bed. I think it helps signal my body and mind to slow down.  Then, I plan to do a bit of reading—and not a business book!
Making time for creativity.
Marbling is one of my favorite things to do, and it’s very meditative. Learn how here. I’m also planning to make more time to paint in the evenings.
Pampering myself.
I love to take a bath, and my husband just got me these bath salts which I love. My skin is dry, and this time of year it’s even worse. I’m using this body cream, this oil, and this mask to keep my skin hydrated.
Out and about.
This time of year, getting out of the house can be a struggle for me so I have to remind myself to make plans with friends. I’m also trying to get back in more of a routine when it comes to exercise. There’s a lot going on right now, so I’m taking it easy with calmer exercises like walking and yoga.
We’re going to paint our bedroom to make it cozier. Having a space you love to relax makes it easier unwind. I’m focusing on the bedroom this month as it’s in need of a little love.
