RA: What drew you to this fabric for the roman shades in the bedroom, and how did you imagine it functioning within the space?

The clients and I were all immediately drawn to the warm neutral quality of the Speckled Fabric in Taupe/ Fawn. We were trying to marry warm and cool tones and finishes in this space and it was the perfection-between. The painterly quality felt soft and like an added texture in this primary bedroom, rather than another print. We layered a functional motorized solar shade behind these shades, so we just needed these to add a pleasing decorative note. We finished the shades with a green tape trim that coordinates with the wall color and these remain one of everyone’s favorite fabric selections in their home!

RA: How did using wallpaper on the ceiling shape the atmosphere of this space?

The apartment is perched on a high floor and feels very open and airy throughout, with the exception of this den space which overlooks another building. The clients elected to only have a television in this room, which also doubles as an occasional guest room, so we elected to have this room feel like a departure from the other spaces with its dark and moody quality, which creates the perfect cozy surrounding for movie night or a good night's rest. The wallpaper on the ceiling felt like a playful finishing touch and a joyful detail to enjoy when you are curled up on the sofa.

RA: This room feels almost submerged—like being underwater or looking up at the surface of a pool. What sensation or experience were you hoping to evoke here and how did this particular pattern help you achieve it?

I love this comparison! Especially since we are working within a cityscape and often do what we can to bring the outdoors in. I love this pattern because it is just that—a pattern with a repeat—but it feels organic and more like a pattern found in nature.

RA: More broadly, how do the interiors of this apartment reflect your experience of the city as a landscape?

New York City can feel unlivable, but I think for those who have been here a long time know the trick is finding spaces for respite and I feel so fortunate I can help clients find that at home. I loved the challenge of focusing more on the feeling of this space with high texture choices to both the hand and eye, which I think help create that cozy complement to the hardscape of the city. These great views remind us of our environment, but do not need to shape our full living experience, and we can bring the natural world inside in ways that give us comfort—a lively botanical print, a squishy wool rug, a pattern that reminds you of ocean waves.

RA: I've loved seeing how you've used our Marconi fabric pattern in different ways over the years. Can you share what drew you to it?

I love the Marconi print because all the colorways seem to marry warm and cool tones together so nicely, which is always my favorite combination. The scale is also very pleasing—a little texture from far away and a happy burst of color up close.

RA:What did this project teach you about your design process?

This apartment is a bit of a departure for me from some of the more traditional interiors clients request and it can honestly sometimes be intimidating to shift gears. However, at the heart of what we all do as designers is listen to our clients and react to their point of view, so in that way it was reassuring exercise to work with such a lovely couple to execute something that feels true to them.
